Abstract
Four issues - Practical: how do we deal with extensive, often un-hierarchical, data repositories? - Methodological: how do we systematically compare archived data from separate, autonomous archives, in different historical periods - Historical: How do we see the deployment of research methods themselves as agents of social change? - Political: How do we challenge positivist conceptions of sampling yet in a way which avoids justifying slap-dash research?
